Job Description
We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Genetic Counselor to join our growing Genetics team in a remote capacity. In this role, you'll collaborate closely with the Lead Genetic Counselor, bringing your analytical and problem-solving skills to provide exceptional support to our patients.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct genetic risk assessments and offer counseling to patients or couples seeking preconception guidance.
Provide genetic counseling for patients following PGT-A, PGT-M, and PGT-SR testing.
Gather and review medical and family histories, documenting them using standard pedigree nomenclature on a case-by-case basis.
Coordinate and communicate results from PGT testing laboratories with patients, offering insights on findings to healthcare providers and nursing staff.
Liaise with patients' insurance providers to determine the correct laboratories for sample submissions, discussing potential costs for prospective tests.
Assist patients in making informed decisions between prenatal screening and invasive prenatal diagnosis, demonstrating advanced knowledge of available tests such as first-trimester screening and cell-free DNA testing.
Help patients understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives associated with invasive testing options like CVS and amniocentesis, supporting physicians with the consent process.
Complete laboratory requisitions for genetic testing on behalf of healthcare providers.
Advise on appropriate carrier testing and counseling related to recessive genes that are common in specific ethnic groups or based on family history.
Provide counseling via phone or in person regarding results for significant or minor impact diseases identified by multiplex or other panels (NGS).
Facilitate case preparation for single-gene disorder testing, including data entry and reviewing clinical genetic reports.
Stay updated on emerging technologies in IVF, fetal medicine, and prenatal diagnosis.
Conduct clinical evaluations and counseling for patients or couples with suspected or diagnosed genetic disorders.
Develop policies and procedures for the Genetic Counseling Department to respond effectively to questions about genetic testing and counseling.
Participate in case conferences with the genetic team to review patient cases collaboratively.
Plan and conduct educational programs for both the public and professionals on medical genetics and genetic counseling issues.
Uphold the organization's core values in all aspects of your work.
Provide support for the Oocyte Donation Program.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited genetic counseling program (required).
ABGC Certification or Board Eligible status (required). Note: The successful candidate must become certified within five years of graduation and maintain certification during employment, with re-certification required every five years.
Current state licensure or application upon eligibility (required).
Experience with an Employee Medical Records (EMR) System (preferred).
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word) (required).
A strong interest in reproductive genetics and experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory setting.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and foster strong working relationships.
Demonstrated expertise in continuous quality improvement and results orientation.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
